Valentine’s Day today
The fourteenth of February undoubtedly counts among very special days of the year. It is a time when lovers across the world cherish their feelings for each other more than usually. On this unique day you can really feel that love is in the air.
Valentine’s Day is a time when people express love for their significant others in a special way. It is accompanied by some customs and traditions which have been in use for many centuries. Cards designed for this special day are often called “Valentines” in honour of St. Valentine who, according to a legend, was the author of the first Valentine card to be ever written. Sometimes the cards are sent anonymously and are signed with a phrase “From Your Valentine”. In such a case, the receiver of the card is faced with a difficult, however pleasant task to guess who their secret admirer is.
Couples often celebrate Valentine’s Day with a romantic date which is usually carefully planned. Everybody wants this day to be special in every way. People often want to present their beloved ones with a thoughtful gift that would express how they feel about this person. Sometimes it is a day when couples become engaged or get married.
On Valentine’s Day you are surrounded by symbols of love of various kinds. On February 14, as well as days before the holiday, you can buy all kinds of love cards, lovely teddy bears, heart-shaped chocolates, and roses. All of these are considered to be symbols of Valentine’s Day and are eagerly chosen by those who want to make this day special.
On February 14, love and romance is also noticeable in the media. TV and radio staions often prepare special programmes dedicated to the topic of Valentine’s Day. Radio stations usually enable their listeners to send Valentine greetings or dedicate a song to somebody they have warm feeling for. During the day you are sure to hear a lot of love songs, both cheerful and sentimental melodies with lyrics that can always serve as a romantic love poem.
